“How Oprah Winfrey Can Influence Undecided Women to Support Kamala Harris”
Kamala Harris is set to hit the campaign trail in Michigan on Thursday night, joined by Oprah Winfrey for a livestream event aimed at engaging grassroots organizations that could sway undecided women voters. The event, organized by Win With Black Women, seeks to harness the support Harris has garnered from over 140 groups since her nomination, translating that enthusiasm into increased voter registration and participation.
While Winfrey, a registered independent, has previously endorsed Barack Obama, she is now backing Harris as she aims to become the first woman, and woman of color, to hold the presidency. Democratic strategist Angelo Greco acknowledged the role of celebrity endorsements in elections but emphasized that they serve as a means to connect voters back to policy issues.
Addressing the Gender Gap Among Black Voters
Despite Harris’s strong backing from Black women, there are signs that some Black male voters are shifting towards Donald Trump. Acknowledging this trend, Harris expressed her commitment to earning their votes through policy and understanding community needs. “I’m working to earn [their] vote, not assuming that I would have it because I’m Black,” she stated at a recent National Association of Black Journalists event.
Winfrey’s endorsement, highlighted during her speech at the Democratic National Convention, could bolster Harris’s efforts to reach not only Black voters but a broader audience. A study from Northwestern University found that Winfrey’s support was particularly effective in mobilizing middle-aged white women during the 2008 election. Although Winfrey may not have the same daily television presence now, her influence remains significant.
Grassroots Engagement and Policy Discussion
The virtual rally, set for 8 p.m. ET, will feature various grassroots groups, including White Dudes for Harris, Win With Black Men, South Asians for Harris, and Republicans for Harris. Participants will discuss their support for the Vice President and the importance of voting.
“My goal is to get people excited about the privilege and power of the vote,” Winfrey stated in a press release.
Greco emphasized that the event must generate enthusiasm among undecided voters, highlighting the importance of Harris articulating her policy positions clearly. He pointed out that many swing state voters prioritize economic issues, suggesting that Harris could resonate with diverse communities by showcasing her policies on childcare and taxes.
“In swing states like Pennsylvania, if we can capture even a small percentage of groups like Italian Americans, it could make a significant difference in the election,” Greco noted.
As Harris and Winfrey unite to inspire voters, their efforts reflect a strategic approach to galvanize support leading up to the critical election.
